With Philip Lim quoting ‘violent romanticism’ as his inspiration for his spring/summer 2009 collections, and space-age modernism becoming a starting point for many of this seasons collections, it is perhaps no surprise that ultra-modern shapes and slick forms were key to the season’s hair trends.
Hair became dramatic and dynamic with buns, twists and chignons sitting high on the head with high shine, in sculptural shapes. Aveda’s Odile Gilbert created Lim’s above-the-ear buns (pictured), and Rodarte’s tight twists, telling Vogue that “the inspiration [was] an alien…something very pure, simple and clean. I approached the hair like origami – carefully folding and wrapping hair in circular motions.”
In other words, us mere mortals who want to recreate the style may need a bit of practice.
