Betaine – this is used by the liver to produce choline, a compound that calms nervousness, enhances memory, promotes muscle growth, and protects against fatty liver disease.
Physalin - active against all major types of leukemia this has also been used as a treatment for hepatitis B.
Solavetivone – a powerful anti-fungal and anti-bacterial compound.
Beta-Sitoserol – this is an anti-inflammatory agent which mean it may calm inflamed skin and acne. It also has a cholesterol lowering effect.
Cyperone – benefits the heart and helps maintain normal blood pressure. It has also been used in the treatment of cervical cancer.
The goji berry also contains two key nutrients for healthy vision: zeaxanthin and lutein. These are concentrated at the center of the retina and protect the eye from the most common causes of age-related loss of sight, including macular degeneration, cataracts and diabetic retinopathy.
Free radicals also attack the eyes, and zeaxanthin and lutein protect against such damage. Animal research in China has shown that eating goji berries can reduce free radical damage of the retina. It’s easy to see why the Goji Berry has become so popular!
