Leg It

When it comes to plastic surgery, I thought I had heard it all. It seems though, that there’s nothing that can’t be done these days and breakthrough treatments are appearing all the time.

Each week, we’ll be looking at different cosmetic surgical procedures, and to kick us off we’re looking at calf augmentations.

To find out more, read on…

Calf Augmentation is a procedure designed to increase the size of the calves through the insertion of artificial implants into the calf. The implants are solid silicones and come in various sizes to suit the needs of the patients.

Calf implants add mass and definition to the leg. Men tend to undergo this treatment to appear stronger, while women usually do it to add proportion to their bodies. People use this as a cosmetic procedure, however it can also correct genetic disorders and diseases like polio, spina bifida and club foot.

This procedure is performed using either local or general anesthesia. After the anesthesia takes effect the surgeon makes incisions at the back of the knee. A small pocket is created to fit in the implant. The implant is then pushed  into the pocket and placed above the muscle. Close care is taken to make sure both the legs are symmetrical. Once the desired results are attained on both legs, the areas are stitched up.

After the surgery the legs would be worn out and fatigued but this feeling only lasts for a few of weeks. Most patients would be able to return to their normal life after a week or two.

All surgery contains their own risks. However, particular risks for calf augmentation include infection and bleeding and shifting causing the legs to appear asymmetrical.
