Hourglass
The UK National Sizing Survey has revealed that women’s body shapes have changed dramatically in the last fifty years. In the 1950s the average British woman’s figure was petite: the average height was a dinky 5ft 2in, and women rarely weighed over 9st 10lb. Even women’s feet were smaller at size 3 1/2.
The average vital statistics were – 37-27-39 – giving that classic hour-glass the era.
Now, the survey has revealed, we are not just heavier but taller too and we have larger feet. The average 2009 lady is 5 ft 4in, has size 6 feet and weighs around a stone more. The real discovery of the survey though, is the amount of weight women carry around their stomachs now – a total difference of 6 1/2 inches. The hourglass figure seems to becoming something of the past. It is thought that we are consuming the same around of calories as our 1950s counterparts, but eat faster and have diets with too much sugar and too much saturated fat – giving our bodies an apple, rather than hourglass shape.
