Definition – Punctate Leukonychia
Better known as those white spots on your nail, Punctate Leukonychia can be the sign of a range of health issues from zinc deficiency to an allergic reaction.
Most commonly, they don’t mean anything.
White spots are the result of imperfect nail formation. When the nail is forming, an air bubble or irritant which gets under the nail will cause the keratin in the nail to grow differently. It usually occurs after banging your finger of something or bending the nail – causing a small trauma.
They aren’t usually seen until a few months after the incident as nails take so long to grow.
