The official cost of living basket now has these two new beauty items as part of their must-buys, along with liquid soap and mineral water. The list is used to measure changes in prices and the official inflation rate has been updated to reflect our changing spending habits.

Hair straighteners have become a part of many peoples beauty routines from school girls and grown women and even men. As a result the Office for National Statistics has decided hair straighteners should replace hair dryers in the cost of living basket.

Lip gloss has replaced lipstick and liquid soap has replaced bars of soap in the basket.

The ONS collects about 180,000 prices every month for a basket of some 650 goods and services.
